Dog Toy Exploration

This is a collection of some sketches, both refined and unrefined, that I did focused around dog toys. I wanted to design into this category because there’s a ton of room here for creativity and fun! This was a small passion project for my own enjoyment :)

Storechecks

I took a stroll to my local Petsmart and saw a lot of the same kinds of toys. I’ve broken them down into 3 categories:

  • Fetch toys

  • Character-driven toys

  • Toys that have treats hidden inside

Category 1: Fetch Toys

Fetch toys: a staple in the dog toy world!

The spaghetti plate frisbee is one of my favourites from this bunch. I think it’s a playful touch on a classic toy. I can imagine this would be charming to have lying around as a dog owner. Perhaps this could spark a collection of food related fisbees? I also just really enjoyed the form of the UFO frisbee in my final sketch - so sleek!

Category 2: Character-Driven

I thought the idea of incorporating "stereotypes" into character-driven toys could be fun. Dogs are famously known for chasing squirrels and mailmen, so why not bring these characters to life as toys? I specifically really liked the squirrel toy and think the counterweight/wobbling effect adds an additional engaging element for dogs.

Category 3: Hidden Treat

"Hiding" treats in dog toys is an excellent way to keep dogs engaged for extended periods. One of my favorite concepts is the Slot Machine/Bone design, which creatively combines the thrill of "winning" a treat with the excitement of "scoring big" at a slot machine.
